Der Fahrplan bis zur APEX Connect 2019

Im Mai 2017 hatte ich euch gefragt worauf ihr euch am meisten freut was die damals anstehende APEX Connect betraf.
Nun schreiben wir das Jahr 2019 und bis zur Connect stehen noch einige Events vor der Tür, bei denen es neben dem technischen Wissensaustausch vor allem auch um die Vernetzung und das teilen des gemeinsamen Spirits geht.

Und falls Ihr euch fragt weshalb ich immer und immer wieder von "Spirit" rede, dann schaut euch mal den Artikel "#NextGenTrip18 — Community at Its Best" im ORAWORLD Magazin auf Seite 39 an. Dieser repräsentiert das Wort "Spirit" ganz gut. :)

Meetups
Das nächste Meetup findet am 11.03. in München zum Thema "APEX 19.1 New Features" statt.
Die anderen Meetupgruppen befinden sich noch im Winterschlaf. News gibt es aus Dresden, dort wurde eine neue Meetup Gruppe gegründet. Das erste Treffen ist bereits in Planung.
Eine Übersicht aller Meetups findet ihr auf apex.world.
Eure Stadt fehlt? Ihr wollt aber trotzdem eine Gruppe gründen und wisst nicht wie? Schreibt mich einfach an (Twitter, Mail) und ich versuche euch dabei zu unterstützen.


Workshops
Am 18.03. findet ein kostenloser APEX Workshop in Trier statt inklusive Hands On. Beeilt euch die Plätze sind begrenzt.

In Frankfurt gibt es am 13.03 einen kostenlosen Oracle Datenbank-Technologie Tag.

Zwischen dem 09.-10.04 bietet die MT AG einen APEX Migrations-Workshop an. Geeignet für alle die endlich auf APEX 18.2 migrieren möchten.


APEX Competition
Bis zur Connect läuft parallel auch die APEX Competition 2019 bei der es darum geht ein APEX Plugin zu entwickeln. Der Gewinner erhält 850 €.
Die Competition läuft noch bis zum 07. April. Genug Zeit für eurer erstes Plugin, den passenden Einstieg findet ihr übrigens in diesem aufgezeichneten Webinar:

Im Mai findet dann die heiligste aller APEX Veranstaltungen im deutschsprachigen Raum statt:

Die APEX Connect

Am Vortag der Connect dem 06.05. (Montag) wird es ein kostenloses Meetup geben, bei dem bekannte Oracle Core Entwickler die letzten News rund um APEX, PL/SQL und Javascript teilen werden.
Zwischen dem 07.05. und dem 09.05. dreht sich dann alles nur noch um die bekannten 4 Buchstaben 

A..P..E..X..

Neben APEX steht natürlich auch wieder SQL, PL/SQL, Datenmodellierung und Javascript im Fokus der Besucher. Highlights rund um das Event werden in den kommenden Wochen über unterschiedliche Blogposts detaillierter kommuniziert, bis dahin schaut euch doch mal die Vortragshighlights und den Bewertungsprozess näher an. Mein Highlight dieses Jahr sind definitiv die Beginner Sessions.
Geeignet für Newcomer, Studenten, ehemalige Forms-Entwickler, DBA's und alle die APEX näher kennenlernen möchten.

Copy and Paste to clipboard

Well I had the requirement to copy the content of a textarea into the clipboard. There are two ways to do that:

1. Build a dynamic action with custom Javascript code:
Copy Text to Clipboard

Creating interactive graphics in APEX with Raphaël (RaphaelJS)

Some of you may know of my personal interest for SVG interaction in APEX applications. I have been working with a JavaScript library called "Raphaël" (RaphaelJS, raphael.js or just raphael) for a while now. It is an amazing plugin to create all kind of customized business solutions. But before I show you how I have used Raphaël I tell you how I came to the technology and what happened in the last few years.


5 years ago an APEX developer called "Matt Nolan" created an impressive example how you can use Raphaël for a custom business case: SVG Body Chart Plugin
 

Inspired by his example I started looking for this library called Raphaël.

 What does the library do?
It creates dynamic SVG graphics with Javascript and JSON.

Why is it so special?
From an APEX developer point of view it gives you great possibilities to create SVG graphics right from the data out of your database and Raphaël itself brings you several ways to create more or less complex solutions. Just go on reading and you will find out.

 How to integrate Raphaël?
Upload the JavaScript file and include it in your APEX page.

Who made this library?
The developer behind Raphaël is Dmitry Baranovskiy. Compared to the APEX community he is the Patrick Wolf for SVG solutions using JavaScript. At least in my mind. :)
After the success of Raphaël he joined Adobe. There he created an library called Snap which is quite similar to Raphael and real powerful. Unfortunately it seems that the Snap library is not further developed anymore. The last release is from 2 years ago.

Support?
The last Raphael release is from July 2016. Having questions use "Stack Overflow".

Why not creating the same kind of solution as Matt did?
It took me a while before I had the time thinking about the possibilities and purpose in business applications. I mean not every developer can create an example as Matt did. So I had some reasons to consider about:

1. No sources available
The typical company does not have SVG graphics to visualize their custom business situations. Mostly they use some advanced Excel files including some graphical parts to visualize their business cases. So if you create an APEX application based on those Excel solutions, the customers want their "beautiful" visualization in the APEX application as well.
For example an "workshop plan".

2. Complexity
It is really complicated to create a SVG graphic for the typical APEX developer.
Interacting with SVG graphics is also not the typical activity for an APEX developer.
Moving an SVG to the database to build it with Raphael is not easy either.
You may have to use Raphaël with other JavaScript libraries to enhance the user experience.

3. Time and Money
The more complex the example the more times it takes creating a result and it will become more expensive in the first run and on future updates.

4. Maintenance
Could a decent APEX developer take my solution and extend it? This is an important question to me.

What did I do?
2 Years ago I created an example application for the DOAG 2014.
There I published several examples how you can use Raphaël on top of an existing image file. I only created a few moving SVG components to interact with the application user.

Advantages:
- It is really easy to integrate.
- You do not need an SVG out of your Excel file to publish it in APEX.
- Less code because of the static background image

Disadvantage
- The image can't be responsive
- It can never be as beautiful as the example from Matt

The image, the data and the Raphael code comes directly from inside the database. Published with a PL/SQL procedure:

APEX itself needs a region from type: "PL/SQL Dynamic Content"

From my point of view:
You get a new way publishing data in a decent amount of time and low complexity in the source code.



This was two years ago.

On this years DOAG 2016 I will tell you how you can achieve even more powerful examples.
Using the Raphael extension Mapael for custom map visualizations or how to create an own SVG and convert it real fast towards APEX. And maybe there will come some more...

UILayout for Universal Theme

I'm currently develop a new version running only inside the Universal Theme (UT).  This version is completely redesigned and focused only to work with the UT.

APEX Dashboard Competition

Liebe APEX Community,

ich bin froh nun endlich die nächste große Sache präsentieren zu können. Wir veranstalten eine APEX Competition nach dem Vorbild der APEX Gaming Competition.

Erschafft eine APEX Dashboard Anwendung.

Kurz zusammengefasst:
Erstellt bis zum 01.04.2016 eine APEX Universal Theme Anwendung mit einer Seite die auf Basis eines vorgefertigten Sets von Daten, die ultimative Dashboard Erfahrung liefert.

Oracle JET Charts - Do we need alternatives anymore?

After I looked through the chart types supported by the new Oracle JET framework I asked myself if we need other chart plugins like D3JS or RaphaelJS in future APEX releases anymore?

The answer is: Yes in special cases.

My supposition is that we can use all available JET charts in one of the next versions of Oracle APEX.

Now I will describe the "special case" with two examples where other charting frameworks still make sense:
